Fun Fact or Story:This past summer I co-lead a group of teenagers on a self-supported bike tour across the country. We took the southern route and cycled about 2,700 miles from Charleston, SC to San Diego, CA - in 40 days! One of our most iconic days was our 113.7 mile day biking from Phoenix, AZ to Wenden, AZ. We hit the road an hour before first light, turned our beaming headlamps on and flashed our red tale lights and rode under the stars on city bike paths, basking in the cool temperatures. It wasn't the day's mileage nor the 110 degree temperatures that made the day. We ended up being on the road for 17 hours (9 hours of biking, 8 hours of road side bike maintenance).
To rattle off some wild stats and moments - we had 22 flats from thorns and wires on the side of the road, biked through a lightening and dust storm, trued a few wheels, 1 broken and later Jerry-rigged rear derailleur, and an epic mid-day feast of fried chicken. Safe to say that their college essay essentially wrote itself. A big shout-out to that legendary team and the glistening Pacific ocean!
