How do I shop for a used bike?
You should be able to comfortably stand over the bike.
If you have to lower the seat to it's lowest setting, the bike is probably too big for you.
Is the bike relatively clean? A clean bike is a happy bike.
Be wary of lots of rust on the frame or components. Squeeze the front and rear brake levers. Do they move freely, or require a lot of force? Requiring a lot of force could be a sign of neglect. Are the cables rusty? Not a good sign.
Check all the "wearables" (tires, brake pads, seat, grips) for excessive signs of wear. Tires should not appear dried out or show cracks.
If the bike appears to be relatively clean, everything moves freely, and only one part appears to need replacing (seat or grips perhaps) then the bike was most likely well used, but well maintained.
*Summer sporting goods only please (bikes, wheels, car racks,
baby joggers and trailers, etc.). No clothing or helmets.
